Employee Spotlight: Andy, Control System Specialist
March 26, 2024What is your role at Flexxaire?
I am the Control System Specialist in the Engineering department.
What do your responsibilities consist of?
When a customer requests an Infinitely Variable Control system I evaluate their cooling and reversing needs to determine which control system is best for them. If we do not have an existing kit, I create one.
I am also responsible for writing the software that allows our controller to communicate with the machine’s engine ECU to get the coolant and intake air temperatures for fan control, as well as writing software to run our wind tunnel facility.
How long have you been working at Flexxaire?
I have been with Flexxaire for twenty-two and a half years.
How do you think your job benefits the company?
Our focus at Flexxaire is to provide high-value solutions for our customers, which starts with understanding the benefits that we can offer each customer as an individual. Each industry that we serve has different cooling and reversing needs.
One advantage to having in-house software development for our controls platform is that we can quickly create custom software solutions to solve our customer’s issues and to help them to succeed.
How has your role evolved since you began with the company?
When I started with the company, I did more fan application designs. Then I was asked if I would like to work on the control systems and that has been my primary focus ever since.
How did you get started in the industry?
I graduated from NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) as a Civil Engineering Technologist in 1997 and worked as a mechanical designer for a heavy haul trailer manufacturer for four years. My engineering manager left the trailer company and came to work at Flexxaire. When a job opened at Flexxaire, he told me that it was a great company and that I would be a good fit, so I came to work here.
